What Is an Average Calculator?
An average calculator finds the central value of a set of numbers. The most common type is the arithmetic mean — add all the values together, then divide by how many there are. It is one of the most frequently used calculations in everyday life, from checking your exam results to reviewing monthly expenses.
For example, if your test scores are 70, 85, 90, and 75, the average is (70 + 85 + 90 + 75) ÷ 4 = 80.
Types of Average — Which One Do You Need?
The word “average” can refer to several different calculations depending on your situation:
- Arithmetic mean — the standard average; sum divided by count. Best for equal-weight datasets like test scores or temperatures.
- Weighted average — each value has a different importance (weight). Essential for GPA calculations, investment portfolios, and survey analysis where some items matter more than others.
- Percentage average — the mean of a set of percentage values, commonly used for growth rates, pass rates, and completion figures.
- Average speed — total distance divided by total time. Useful in travel, logistics, and fitness tracking.
Simple vs Weighted Average: What’s the Difference?
A simple average treats every number equally. A weighted average assigns each number a “weight” that reflects its relative importance. Consider a university course where the final exam is worth 60% and coursework 40%. A simple average of both marks would give an inaccurate result — the weighted average correctly reflects how the marks contribute to the final grade.
How to Calculate GPA Using an Average
A GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of your grades, where each course is weighted by its credit hours. Multiply each grade by the number of credits for that course, add the results together, then divide by the total number of credits. Our Grade/GPA tab does this automatically and converts your percentage to a 4.0 GPA scale.
Why Use an Online Average Calculator?
Doing averages by hand is straightforward for two or three numbers, but becomes error-prone with larger datasets. An online calculator handles any number of values instantly, reduces arithmetic mistakes, and lets you re-run calculations quickly when values change. There is nothing to install or log in to — just enter your numbers and get your answer.
